Back Again!!!
ADAA Grand Prix at Uralla in NSW - October 2002

As Narrated by the newest adventurer Jonty...
Jonty joined the Harrisonhill clan in May 2002 aged 18months and started his agility career with Glenn not long after. Six short months later he is joining Billy and Missy on his first agility adventure down to Uralla for the 2002 ADAA Grand Prix- bigger and better than last year!

Friday 04/10/02: You know in the six months I've been living with this crew they've done some weird things, lots of fun most of the time, but certainly different stuff from the backyard I was used to. And I think this takes the cake- Dad got home about 5pm, Mum had been packing the Ute all day, my crate was in, my blanket was in, I have my collar on and the others tell me this means we're going camping. What's camping I ask? Anyway that was a few hours back now, we've now been in the car for around five hours or so, I've slept most of the way. Except when that policeman fellow pulled us up to make Dad blow in some bag- when he shone his torch at the back of the ute I told him off for waking me up. I love making people jump when I bark!!! Anyway we are now at this strange place with lots of smells, its very dark, I can smell other dogs but I can't see them. And Mum keeps telling me hush, don't wake anyone up. Mum and Dad have pulled everything out of the ute and now there is this sort of temporary house thing the others call a tent with my crate in it and then in the other tent a low bed on the floor for Mum and Dad. They say it's 1am and that we should lie down and sleep for a few hours. Okay.

Saturday 05/10/02: Wow, now I can see- we've set up camp at a big showgrounds and there's lots of those tent things and hundreds of dogs. Wow! And there's agility equipment in the ring- so that's what we're doing here. Good I like running round the jumps and stuff with Dad- he gives me the best yummy treats and gets excited and I get lots of pats.

Mum says I'm in ring two doing starters and intermediate with Dad and her and Missy and Billy are in ring one with two rounds each in the Individual Challenge (Open Agility and Snooker) and the first round of the Teams Challenge. Missy was the first of us to go in the Open Agility round- she wasn't really on fire, it was a bit warm at 1pm in the arvo and some distractions, and I think Mum was a bit nervous, but they still managed to go clear. YAY! And Billy did good with a mistake at the weaves for five faults and a little over time. Then it was my turn in starters- but I saw the tunnel after the weaves and popped out at ten weaves - Dad made me go back and do them again, all of them but otherwise I think I did pretty good. Then it was Mum's turn again in round 2 of the individual challenge- Snooker. Missy was first in again but she took a red in the closing sequence and that was it for her- only 30 points. Billy went next and did really well, he got part way through the weaves- number 7, when the whistle went, so 40 points for him. Mum seemed pretty happy, but lots of dogs got the quali points so she says it'll be hard to catch them up now. These guys also have the first round of the team event this arvo, hope they get through it cause there's some big storm clouds coming. Missy's in a team called the Belties- it is a beagle sheltie combination with Snoopy, Gerry, Breeze and Missy. Billy's team is called the FOBBs- Flicka, Opal, Bella and Billy. Missy is kinda preoccupied, she doesn't really seem to want to run- then she has the spread rail down and then two incorrect entries at the weaves. Not good. A couple of her other team members make lots of mistakes too. That's not going to help the team score. Billy's turn- wow look at him go- clear and 5 secs under time. Way to go Billy! AND the rest of his team go clear too- wahhooo- that puts their team into the lead and Billy needed that quali card for his teams title. That's great. Just finished in time too as the storm is getting close. We'll have tea and go to bed I think, with that storm there'll be no more agility tonight. And I think we'll sleep with Mum and Dad that thunder is real loud and the lightening is very bright.

Sunday 06/10/02: Sunday dawned very early and clear skies. We'd stayed nice and dry but some other camps were hanging things out to dry. I went for a nice run, had brekky and geed Dad up- today's the day, I want to do agility and do it good. My first class is Intermediate Jumping- just jumps, weaves and tunnels but Dad is doing lots more turns than usual. Wow, this course is pretty tricky, but you show me where to go Dad and I'll be there. No worries. Clear And under time. Yahoo, my first ever clear round and it was in Intermediate - I'm just tooo clever, watch me run and eat my dust! Wahoo!!! And guess what- it was Dad's first quali too- we are just too cool!

Mum's later starting in the other ring as they needed to run the competition from last night that got postponed due to the storm. It's the last round of the Individual challenge- Missy runs clear but the time, oh no, 0.44secs over time. No clear round, but still a good placing. Mum goes all out with Billy, pushes hard, but oh no she sent him over the wrong jump on that front cross. Oops, no points for him this round. Mum will have to redeem herself to him in the teams event up next.

But overall in the Individual challenge her and Missy came sixth, not too bad. But now its my go in Starters- yeh, I'm on fire- clear no faults- too cool. Second quali card. Dad's real happy- he's beaming! We're getting better at this stuff.

The last round of the team event is a relay, Mum's pretty nervous, but excited. She needs to remember two different paths for each of the dogs- but they all love relays the dogs running together like that gets the adrenaline pumping. The Belties are up before the FOBBs- they're running in reverse team order. Missy does real good- flying around, nice tight turns, good changeover- but oh no, little Breeze has jumped the wrong jump- oh no, eliminated. They were the fourth team on and all the teams have been eliminated so far- I hope Billy's team do better, it'll be an anticlimax otherwise. They're the last to go- the pressure is on- Billy's running the third leg- clear so far- go Billy, come on, tight turn, nice blind cross, go Billy go, good changeover in the box, go Flicka- yeah- they're clear!!!! They win the Mini challenge- they win both team classes and get quali cards in both events- couldn't ask for a better acheivement from the FOBBs! And look out the Belties came in runners-up... gee you just never know how things'll turn out. What a great day, at presentations we win lots of food and lots of rosettes and ADAA glasses, and those green cards Dad seems to covet the most.

Monday 07/10/02: Monday was a public holiday and was the last day of our agility fun. It was only a short day to give us all a chance to get home in the afternoon. Missy and Billy had both open agility and open jumpers- I had another starters class. Dad says if we can get a clear round in it we will have earned our AAD title. Piece of cake I say! And you know what we did it too- Dad is really pleased- we got that clear round card and earned our title. Billy and Missy each had a mistake in the agility, but they were on fire in the jumpers- especially Billy- he's usually too slow for jumpers times, but he flew- unfortunately he was still 0.15 over time. Nevermind, Mum seems so very very happy with him- she reckons its not a bad effort for an ol' boy. He was certainly stretching out through that tyre on the run home!
